Neck Pain Q & A

What is neck pain?

Your neck supports the weight of your head and allows it to move in many directions. This constant weight-bearing and flexibility leaves the neck vulnerable to a wide range of conditions that cause pain.

Most of the time, neck pain is due to muscle strain or tension from poor posture. You’ve probably experienced neck pain after sleeping with your head in a funny position, driving for a long period of time, or working for several hours at a computer. This type of neck pain usually resolves on its own within a few days.

If you have neck pain that doesn’t improve with self-care like gentle stretching and massage, or if you experience symptoms like numbness, tingling, or headaches, the team at Pain Solutions can help.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain usually isn’t a serious medical concern, but it may be due to an underlying problem. The team at Pain Solutions evaluates and treats many causes of neck pain, including:

  • Muscle strain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Nerve compression
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Injuries, such as whiplash
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Spondylosis

Rarely, neck pain is due to a serious medical condition like infection, abscess, or cancer of the spine.

How is neck pain diagnosed and treated?

First, the team at Pain Solutions reviews your medical history and performs a physical exam. They may obtain diagnostic tests, such as X-rays or electromyography, to confirm or rule out specific causes of neck pain.

After they diagnose your condition, your pain management physician develops a personalized treatment plan. The team at Pain Solutions offers a wide variety of treatment options, including traditional, interventional, and alternative methods.

Depending on the type and severity of your neck pain, treatment may include:

  • Ice and heat therapy
  • Medication management
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Exercise, stretching, and physical therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Spinal manipulation
  • Acupuncture
  • Nerve blocks

They may also recommend behavioral techniques, such as stress reduction, and regenerative medicine, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

If you have neck pain that’s severe, persistent, or otherwise negatively affects your quality of life, call Pain Solutions or request an appointment online today.
